A pallet truck, sometimes also known as a pallet jack or a pump truck, is equipment used to lift and move pallets.
The small front wheels of a pallet truck are mounted inside the end of the forks while the larger back wheels are located immediately under the truck control arm or handle. The forks are manoeuvred into slots in the side of the pallet. The pallet is raised slightly off the ground with power transferred by hydraulic jack. It is only lifted a matter of a few inches from the ground for subsequent moving.
Pallet trucks can either be operated manually by hand or can be powered. Hand pallet trucks are suitable for smaller loads. The powered units make it possible to lift heavier pallets or several at once that are stacked.
Powered trucks can usually be manoeuvred forwards or backwards by a throttle on the handle. More sophisticated versions may even have a dead manís brake in place of a traditional brake so that the machine stops automatically when the hand is removed from the handle.
Pallet trucks come in many variations including ones that have extra low clearance or extra long forks, trucks that can easily move over rough terrain or that can lift pallets very quickly. Others are designed for extra high clearance, galvanised to guard against corrosion or made of stainless steel for use in hygienic environments. Some are even fitted with weighing scales or have special forks suitable for carrying drums and reels.
Manufacturers of pallet trucks include Bulldog, Eco, Ergo, Pump Truck and Silverline Industries.
Electric Pallet Trucks, Hand Pallet Trucks, Trucks and Trolleys
A pallet truck is a tool which is used to lift and move pallets. The front wheels are mounted inside the end of the forks, and as the hydraulic jack is raised, the forks are separated vertically from the front wheels, forcing the load upward until it clears the floor. The pallet is only lifted enough to clear the floor to achieve subsequent travel.
There are two different types of pallet jacks in common usage today. The most simplistic is the hand pallet truck. These are ideal for use in warehouses where pallets are stored mainly at ground level. The hand pallet truck resembles a dolly that features forks on the front end. The operator walks behind the hand pallet jack, controlling the direction of the truck using a simple steering mechanism. The forks are slid underneath a pallet, and the operator uses a lever to gently active the lifting mechanism on the device. The manual pallet trucks are then used to walk the elevated pallet over to a new location on the warehouse or plant floor.
The second type of pallet truck which is commonly used is the electric pallet truck. Electric pallet trucks are motorized to enable the lifting and movement of heavier and stacked pallets. These generally contain a platform for the user to stand on while hauling pallets around a warehouse or loading and unloading trucks. The electric pallet truck is generally moved by a throttle on the handle to move forward or in reverse and steered by swinging the handle in the intended direction.
For storage situations where pallets are recessed in tall pallet racks or stacked in layers of two or more, powered pallet trucks are a better solution. These types of pallet trucks make use of a small platform for the operator to stand on. A motor provides extra power for lifting pallets out of a pallet rack and stabilizing the load so that the pallet can be transported to another location. A throttle allows the operator to move the pallet truck back and forth, as well as have some control over the angle of the loaded pallet on the forks or blades.
Electric pallet trucks are often constructed with a seating area for the operator. Pallet trucks are very similar to forklifts, and provide much of the same type of manoeuvrability. Unlike forklifts, the pallet trucks tend to be built for use in an indoor facility, rather than being constructed for both indoor and outdoor use.
